DESCRIPTION:
Sequestration – US $240 million is authorized each fiscal year to be appropriated between 2008 and 2012 in order for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to conduct at least seven initial large-scale (at least 1 million tons annually) sequestration tests, not including FutureGen, in order to collect and validate information on the costs and feasibility of commercial deployment of technologies for geologic containment of carbon dioxide.

DOE is to give preference to industrial sources of CO2.“To the extent feasible, the Secretary shall prefer tests that would facilitate the creation of an integrated system of capture, transportation and sequestration of carbon dioxide.” In making competitive awards under this subsection, subject to the requirements of section 989, the Secretary shall give preference to proposals from partnerships among industrial, academic and government entities.

Capture –The same legislation authorized $200 million per fiscal year between 2009 and 2013 for capturing CO2. The DOE has been charged with carrying out a program to demonstrate technologies for the large-scale capture from industrial sources and will select a diversity of capture technologies. The DOE is to make awards on the portion of the large-scale capture that includes purification and compression, provides for the transportation and injection of carbon dioxide and incorporates a comprehensive measurement, monitoring and validation program.
